Center for Prevention of Violent Extremism in Somalia

CPVESOM works to combat and prevent extremist ideologies in Somalia through awareness campaigns, training initiatives, and promoting a shift in the mindset of the country’s predominantly young population, who are often the main drivers of conflicts and vulnerable to the violent extremism and recruitment by extremist groups, particularly among Somalia’s youth population.

About Us

The Center for Prevention of Violent Extremism in Somalia (CPVESOM) is a non-governmental, non-profit, and youth-led organization founded in 2019 in response to the growing challenge of violent extremism and radicalization in Somalia. With a mission rooted in peacebuilding, youth empowerment, and community resilience, CPVESOM works to counter extremist ideologies and reduce the appeal of recruitment by terrorist groups, particularly among Somalia’s youth population.

Our Vision

A peaceful and stable Somalia free from violent extremism and radicalization.

Our Mission

To prevent and counter violent extremism in Somalia by empowering youth, raising awareness, building community resilience, and promoting peaceful and inclusive alternatives to violence through education, advocacy, dialogue, and grassroots action.

Core Values

WHAT WE DO

KEY PROGRAM AREAS

At the heart of CPVESOM’s work are five interconnected program areas that address both the root causes and the manifestations of violent extremism in Somalia, with a strong emphasis on youth empowerment, community resilience, and strategic communication.

1. Youth Engagement and Empowerment

CPVESOM runs leadership development programs, peace fellowships, and peer education initiatives to equip youth with the skills and confidence to lead anti-extremism efforts in their communities. In parallel, vocational training and entrepreneurship support help address the economic vulnerabilities that often make youth susceptible to extremist recruitment. Through these interventions, CPVESOM fosters resilience, civic responsibility, and constructive pathways for Somalia’s youth. This positions young people not as victims or perpetrators, but as active agents of peace and change,

3. Research, Policy, and Advocacy

Recognizing the importance of evidence-based programming, CPVESOM conducts field research to better understand the drivers of radicalization and map hotspots of vulnerability. This data informs the organization’s policy advocacy, which includes the development of policy briefs and engagement with decision-makers to integrate youth-led peacebuilding and prevention strategies into local and national policies. CPVESOM also supports the meaningful participation of young people in dialogue around security and governance, ensuring that prevention efforts are inclusive and responsive to their needs.

4. Community Dialogue and Reconciliation

CPVESOM facilitates safe spaces for intergenerational and inter-clan dialogues, allowing communities to address grievances, overcome divisions, and build collective resistance to extremist ideologies. The organization also organizes reconciliation events between religious and traditional leaders, youth groups, and survivors, and delivers peace education workshops to equip local influencers with the tools to promote nonviolence and reintegration. These efforts help reduce the underlying social tensions that extremists often exploit, and also promotes healing, trust-building, and social cohesion.

5. Capacity Building of Stakeholders

Although teachers, religious leaders, parents, police, and civil society organizations all play a vital role in preventing radicalization, CPVESOM provides training on early warning systems, referral mechanisms, and psychosocial support, ensuring that communities can detect and respond to signs of radicalization. It also strengthens the institutional capacity of local youth networks and community-based organizations to lead sustainable and locally grounded P/CVE (Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism) initiatives.

GEOGRAPHIC REACH

CPVESOM operates across key regions of Somalia with high exposure to radicalization risks, particularly in south-central Somalia and urban centers where youth unemployment and extremist influence are acute.
